Virginia Tech Acceptance Rate & Admission Statistics

Are you interested in applying to Virginia Tech? If so, you might want to look at the public research university’s acceptance rate over the last few admissions cycles. College admissions grows increasingly competitive each year, but some schools prove this doesn’t necessarily have to be true. Virginia Tech is one of these schools. Despite being ranked as one of the top 25 public schools in the nation by US News & World report, Virginia Tech remains only moderately selective, meaning the average student has a pretty good shot of gaining admission. Has this always been the case? Let’s find out:
Virginia Tech Acceptance Rate Over Thirteen Years
Virginia Tech Class Year | Overall Acceptance Rate |
Class of 2029 | Not Yet Released |
Class of 2028 | 57.03% |
Class of 2027 | 56.98% |
Class of 2026 | 56.00% |
Class of 2025 | 65.77% |
Class of 2024 | 70.04% |
Class of 2023 | 64.85% |
Class of 2022 | 70.06% |
Class of 2021 | 70.87% |
Class of 2020 | 73.41% |
Class of 2019 | 72.63% |
Class of 2018 | 70.28% |
Class of 2017 | 70.38% |
Class of 2016 | 66.58% |
Class of 2015 | 67.01% |
Looking at this data, you wouldn’t be remiss to think that Virginia Tech’s acceptance rate hasn’t changed much over the last thirteen years. If you look at VT’s acceptance rate over ten years from the Class of 2015 to the Class of 2025, in which it wavers between 64.85% and 73.41%, you might not notice any clear trendline.
That all began to change by the time the 2021-22 admissions cycle hit. In what was undoubtedly related to shakeups caused by the pandemic, Virginia Tech’s acceptance rate dwindled to the mid/high 50% range. It’s still by no means highly selective, as more than half of all those who apply get in, but this recent decline does suggest that the wave of hyper-competitiveness hitting most elite institutions nationwide might be beginning to sink its teeth into this STEM-focused school located in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The Impact of Virginia Tech’s Test-Optional Policy
Part of this downward shift in acceptance can be explained away by Virginia Tech’s decision to go test-optional during fall 2021, a policy that, despite being in response to the pandemic, is slated to remain in place until at least through fall 2028. Test-optional policies tend to flood applicant pools with “squeakers,” which is Ivy Coach’s term for those students who try to get into a test-optional school they usually wouldn’t get into by withholding their test scores.
While the introduction of the test-optional policy may have temporarily affected Virginia Tech’s acceptance rate, Ivy Coach’s predictions offer a reassuring outlook. Our crystal ball suggests that the acceptance rate will likely remain relatively stable in the coming years, barring any unforeseen global catastrophes. This should give you confidence in your chances of admission. And remember, Ivy Coach is here to help you navigate the process with our team of admissions experts.
